OSH Coordinator Ergonomic Risk Assessment Exercise #
Objective:
To enhance participantsβ understanding of ergonomics in the workplace by identifying and assessing ergonomic risks related to material storage/handling, workstation design, machine usage, and welfare facilities based on real working environments or personal experience.
Instructions: #
- Form a group of 3β5 participants.
- Select a work area (real or based on experience) where ergonomics might be a concern.
- Identify ergonomic issues relevant to the selected area, referring to the following modules:
- Module 8: Penyimpanan & Pengendalian Bahan
π Focus: lifting techniques, storage layout, access difficulty - Module 9: Rekabentuk Stesen Kerja dan Pencahayaan
π Focus: workstation layout, seating, lighting, visibility - Module 10: Productive Machine Safety
π Focus: posture during machine use, repetitive tasks, vibration - Module 11: Premis & Kebajikan Berkaitan Kerja
π Focus: toilets, pantry access, resting area ergonomics
- Module 8: Penyimpanan & Pengendalian Bahan
- Use the DOSH Guidelines from
π https://osh-isis.com/oshc/ergo_dosh.pdf
Refer to:- Table 3.1 to Table 3.14 β for hazard identification, exposure assessment, and ergonomic factor categorization.
- Table 3.15 β Ergonomic Risk Assessment Form
- Fill in Table 3.15 with your group findings:
- Describe the job task or activity.
- Identify the type of ergonomic hazard (e.g., awkward posture, repetitive motion).
- Rate the level of exposure and risk using the criteria in Tables 3.1β3.14.
- The table below is extracted from the Ergonomic DOSH Guidelines
- Table 3.1 – Awkward Posture. (Page 16 – 19 of the Guideline)
- Table 3.2 – Static Work Posture. (Page 20 of the Guideline)
- Table 3.8 – Forceful Exertion. (Page 21 – 27 of the Guideline)
- Table 3.9 – Repetitive Motion. (Page 28 of the Guideline)
- Table 3.10 – Vibration. (Page 29 of the Guideline)
- Table 3.14 – Noise. (Page 32 of the Guideline)
- Propose corrective or improvement actions.
- Present your findings to the class in 3β5 minutes per group.
Group Activity:
Participants are to conduct an initial ergonomic risk assessment within their respective departments or selected work areas. The findings from this assessment should be documented and presented using the standardized format through any form as below
1. PowerPoint format: https://osh-isis.com/ergo/initial_era.pptx, or
2. Excel format: https://osh-isis.com/ergo/initial_era.xlsx, or
3. Paper (Manual writing)
This template ensures consistency in reporting and facilitates a comprehensive review of ergonomic risks identified during the assessment.
Expected Outcome: #
By the end of this exercise, participants will:
- Gain practical understanding of how ergonomics is linked to various OSH elements.
- Learn to use a standardized ergonomic risk assessment method (DOSH format).
- Understand the interaction between poor ergonomic design and workplace injuries.
