Activity: Assess Your EMS Auditor Capability #
An ISO 14001 auditor should have not only auditing knowledge, but also suitable knowledge and experience in the industry being audited.
Your Task #
- Review your own:
- Education
- Working experience
- Environmental experience
- Audit or ISO 14001 experience
- Refer to IAF ID 1:2023 and identify the IAF sector(s) that are most relevant to your experience:
https://iaf.nu/iaf_system/uploads/documents/IAF_ID1_2023_Issue_3_Version2_13062023.pdf
- Select one or two IAF sectors where you believe you have the strongest experience.
- For each selected sector, identify:
- Your relevant working experience
- At least 3 environmental aspects commonly associated with the sector
- Any environmental legal or compliance requirements you are familiar with
- Rate your current capability:
1 – Limited knowledge
2 – Basic knowledge
3 – Competent with some experience
4 – Strong experience
5 – Highly experienced
Final Question #
Based on your self-assessment:
Which IAF sector are you currently most suitable to audit, and what additional knowledge or experience do you still need to develop?
Learning Point #
Completing an ISO 14001 Lead Auditor course does not automatically mean an auditor is competent to audit every industry.
Auditor competence should also be supported by relevant industry knowledge, environmental knowledge and practical experience.
