Standard Specifications for Palm Oil (MS 814:2007) #
Palm oil mills should ensure that their crude and processed palm oil comply with the national standard MS 814:2007, which defines both identity characteristics and quality requirements for Malaysian palm oil. This requirement is aligned with Clause 4.7 of the CoPM, which mandates that the CPO and PK produced shall comply with the specifications.
Identity Characteristics (Guideline Values) #
- Density at 50 °C: ~0.8890–0.8950 kg/L
- Refractive Index (nₙᴅ) at 50 °C: ~1.454–1.456
- Saponification value: ~194–205 mg KOH/g oil
- Unsaponifiable matter: ~0.19–0.44 %
- Fatty acid composition:
- C16:0 (palmitic): 39.2–45.8 %
- C18:1 (oleic): 37.4–44.1 %
- C18:2 (linoleic): 8.7–12.5 %
(Additional values for other FAs, iodine value, melt point, carotenoids also defined)
Quality Requirements #
- Free Fatty Acid (FFA as palmitic): max 2.5 % (special quality), max 5.0 % (standard quality)
- Moisture & impurities: max 0.25 %
- Peroxide value: max 1.0 meq O₂/kg (special), max 2.0 meq O₂/kg (standard)
Operational Relevance for Palm Oil Mills: #
- Audit Focus: Mills should maintain test records verifying that their batches meet both identity and quality benchmarks.
- Documentary Evidence: Calibration logs, lab reports, quality certificates, and batch analysis must be available.
- Clause Links in CoPM Audit: These specifications support compliance with CoPM sections relating to product handling, quality control, and traceability.
Post your lab report and quality certificate in the audit file as evidence. Ensure internal QC procedures reference these MS values.
