1. Training Overview
The MSPO SIA Basic Training was successfully conducted from 5 to 7 January 2026 as an online public training programme via the Zoom platform. The programme was organised to develop participants’ competency in conducting Social Impact Assessment (SIA) in accordance with the requirements of the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) Certification Scheme.
The training introduced participants to the concepts and methodologies of Social Impact Assessment, covering stakeholder identification, stakeholder consultation, social impact identification, significance evaluation, mitigation planning, monitoring programmes, grievance mechanisms and SIA reporting.
To enhance understanding beyond theoretical knowledge, participants were provided with practical exercises and guided assessment activities throughout the programme. These exercises required participants to identify social impacts, evaluate significance, prepare mitigation measures and develop monitoring plans based on realistic operational scenarios. The practical sessions enabled participants to apply the guidance and techniques taught during the programme.
Despite being delivered virtually, the programme maintained a highly interactive learning environment through live discussions, question-and-answer sessions, practical workshops and experience sharing among participants.

All registered participants attended the online sessions actively and fulfilled the programme attendance and assessment requirements.
3. Training Delivery Methodology
The programme was delivered using a blended online learning approach consisting of:
a) Interactive Lectures
Comprehensive explanation of MSPO SIA requirements, stakeholder engagement principles and social sustainability concepts.
b) Guided Practical Exercises
Participants completed structured exercises to identify stakeholders, assess social impacts, evaluate significance, and prepare mitigation and monitoring plans based on practical scenarios.
c) Case Study Discussions
Real-life examples from palm oil operations were used to strengthen participant understanding of SIA implementation.
d) Interactive Workshop Sessions
Participants discussed assessment findings, shared operational experiences and compared approaches under trainer guidance.
e) Question and Answer Sessions
Open discussion sessions were conducted throughout the programme to encourage participant interaction and clarification of technical issues.
f) Knowledge Assessment
Participants completed an individual assessment to evaluate their understanding of the learning outcomes.

Participant feedback indicated an excellent level of satisfaction with the overall programme.

Overall feedback indicated that the practical exercises significantly improved participant understanding by enabling them to apply the assessment methodology directly using guided examples.
No negative comments or dissatisfaction were recorded throughout the programme. Participants expressed appreciation for the trainer’s guidance, practical approach and interactive delivery style.
5. Participant Understanding Assessment
The assessment results demonstrated an excellent level of participant understanding.
According to the assessment summary, all 19 participants successfully passed the competency assessment with scores ranging between 97% and 99% and are recommended for the awarding of the Certificate of Achievement.

6. Trainer Observation
Throughout the three-day online programme, participants demonstrated a high level of commitment and engagement.
The trainer observed that participants:
- actively participated in discussions and workshops;
- asked relevant technical questions throughout the programme;
- demonstrated good analytical skills during practical exercises;
- collaborated effectively during interactive activities; and
- successfully applied the assessment guidance provided during the training.
Although delivered virtually, participant interaction remained active through Zoom discussions, screen-sharing sessions and exercise presentations. The practical exercises greatly enhanced participant confidence in conducting Social Impact Assessments independently.
7. Summary of Improvement Suggestions
Participant feedback reflected a high level of satisfaction with only minor suggestions for further enhancement:
- Include additional case studies covering different types of certified organisations.
- Allocate more time for practical workshop discussions.
- Provide additional examples of completed SIA reports and mitigation plans.
- Continue providing downloadable templates and reference materials after training.
No negative feedback or dissatisfaction was recorded during the programme evaluation. Overall comments reflected strong appreciation for the practical learning approach and trainer support.
8. Recommendations for Future Training
Based on participant feedback and trainer observations, the following recommendations are proposed:

Expand the number of real operational case studies from plantations, mills, dealers and independent smallholders.

Provide additional reporting templates and practical reference documents to support workplace implementation.

Continue conducting periodic refresher programmes to keep participants updated with future revisions to the MSPO Certification Scheme and SIA requirements.
9. Conclusion
The MSPO SIA Basic Training conducted from 5 to 7 January 2026 was successfully completed through the Zoom online platform with the participation of 19 participants.
The programme successfully achieved its intended objectives of enhancing participant competency in conducting Social Impact Assessments in accordance with the MSPO Certification Scheme. The integration of guided practical exercises enabled participants to apply theoretical knowledge to realistic assessment scenarios, thereby strengthening their understanding and confidence.
Assessment results demonstrated excellent competency, with 100% of participants passing the assessment and achieving scores between 97% and 99%. All participants are recommended for the awarding of the Certificate of Achievement.
Participant evaluation also indicated a high level of satisfaction, with an overall average rating of 4.8 out of 5.0 and no negative feedback received. Participants particularly appreciated the practical exercises, interactive discussions, and clear guidance provided throughout the programme.
Based on participant engagement, assessment outcomes and trainer observations, the programme is considered highly successful in supporting competency development for Social Impact Assessment implementation under the MSPO Certification Scheme.
